Healthy Tips Video: Pool Safety

Video Transcript

Hi, my name is Mackenzie Morris, and I'm the aquatic supervisor here at the Owensboro Health Healthpark. I wanted to stop by to share a couple pool safety tips for you all, with the pools opening right around the corner.

Number one, parent supervision. Don't just be present while your children are swimming. Always stay within arm's reach. Always stay prepared, vigilant, and preventative of any emergency situations that may arise.

Number two, make sure to buy your child a bright-colored swimsuit for this pool season. You can either pick neon, yellow, pink, orange, or any other neon colors. Please be mindful to stay away from blue or skin-colored bathing suits. The color of your child's bathing suit can help assist lifeguards and others in keeping an eye on your child this season. Number three, pool safety also entails being safe in all bodies of water.

With pools opening up this season, that also means lake and river season are right around the corner. Even if you and your children are strong swimmers, you need to make sure to wear a life jacket when you're out on large bodies of water, such as rivers or lakes.

Swimmers, you need to make sure you always wear a life jacket and take that extra step to ensure that it is fitted properly. A way that you can test if it is fitted properly is if you put it on the individual, zip it up, and place your hands on the shoulder pads and lift up towards the ears.

If the life jacket lifts up over the ears, then it is too big. Please try and tighten the life jacket, or get another life jacket that is smaller and can fit that individual. For more information about aquatics programming or other health information, contact the Healthpark at 270-688-5433.
