Functional Medicine

What is Functional Medicine?

Our goal is for you to be healthy in body, mind, and spirit. The Owensboro Health functional medicine model of care goes deeper than just treating symptoms - we want to answer the question, “Why are you sick?” so we can provide personalized care that gets to the root of the problem.

Functional medicine uses a holistic approach to treat the chronic diseases you’re facing. After gathering your medical history, completing bloodwork, and doing a comprehensive physical exam, we’ll identify the underlying causes of your illness. These causes can include triggers you may not have thought of, including poor nutrition, allergens, stress, toxins, genetics and the bacteria in your body.

Once we’ve identified root causes, we’ll put together a customized healthy living plan that focuses on improving essential factors in your life - including nutrition, sleep, stress management, exercise and mental and emotional stressors.

We don’t want to just treat a symptom with medication - we’ll treat your whole body with sustainable lifestyle improvements.

What to Expect

Before your first visit, you’ll fill out an extensive medical history form. This will give us the background we need to investigate your chronic conditions. The history will ask about your lifestyle, genetics, environment, and previous medical diagnoses and treatments.

During your first appointment, we’ll review this history, perform a physical exam, and order lab tests and specialized blood tests as needed. We’ll also identify your health goals, discuss your customized treatment plan, and determine our next steps (depending on the results of your lab tests).

The functional medicine model of care provides the best results for patients who are motivated to set goals and make long-term lifestyle changes to improve their health and reduce their risk of chronic disease.
